Save The Aztec

October 10, 2000
TO: Board of Supervisors
SUBJECT: SAVE THE AZTEC

Summary:

For 75 years, San Diego State University has proudly held the Aztec as its mascot. The Aztec is a symbol of the University and is displayed widely on T-shirts, book bags, the pedestrian bridge at College Avenue and on SDSU team uniforms. For years, fans have cheered on the home team after the Monty Montezuma mascot runs out onto the football field. As the honored ruler of the powerful Aztec empire, Monty Montezuma is a mascot of which to be proud. With five SDSU alumni on this Board of Supervisors, it=s extremely important to us to continue the proud tradition of the Aztec mascot.

Recommendation:
CHAIRWOMAN DIANNE JACOB AND SUPERVISOR PAM SLATER

Direct the Chief Administrative Officer to draft a letter of support, to be signed by the Chair of the Board, to the University Senate and San Diego State University President, Stephen Weber, outlining this Board=s support for maintaining the SDSU mascot, the Aztec.

Fiscal Impact:
There is no fiscal impact as a result of this request.

BACKGROUND:
For 75 years, San Diego State University has proudly held the Aztec as its mascot. The Aztec is a symbol of the University and is displayed widely on T-shirts, book bags, the pedestrian bridge at College Avenue and on SDSU team uniforms. For years, fans have cheered on the home team after the Monty Montezuma mascot runs out onto the football field.

Recently, this symbol of tradition has come under fire. Last month the Native American Student Alliance adopted a resolution to scrap the mascot. This resolution was approved last week by the Associated Students Council by a vote of 22-8-1. On October 10, the resolution will go before the University Senate and then to President Weber=s desk for a final decision.

With five SDSU alumni on this Board of Supervisors, it=s extremely important to us to continue the proud tradition of the Aztec mascot. The Aztec is a symbol of SDSU and a symbol of its heritage and tradition. As the honored ruler of the powerful Aztec empire, Monty Montezuma is a mascot of which to be proud and one that will help the legend of the Aztecs live on. It would be a shame to turn our back on this history. We urge your support.

Respectfully Submitted,

DIANNE JACOB
