On January 3, 2001 the community of Alpine woke up to a fast spreading wild fire that rapidly consumed everything in its path. Homes and structures were immediately lost as residents evacuated for safety. In the end, over 10,000 acres were consumed by the fire. 15 homes were damaged or destroyed and many more outbuildings, trailers and vehicles were destroyed. The community of Alpine responded by coming together to aid victims and firefighters during the blaze. The community of Alpine has continued to help victims by establishing an emergency relief fund. The financial aid will go towards food, clothing, temporary shelter and structural repair.

This action would appropriate $20,000 into the Alpine Emergency Relief Fund to help victims of the Viejas Fire. 

Recommendation:
SUPERVISOR DIANNE JACOB: 
Direct the Chief Administrative Officer to appropriate $20,000 into the Alpine Emergency Relief Fund to help victims of the Viejas Fire.

Fiscal Impact:
Funding will come from the 1999/2000 Community Reinvestment Balance.
