COUNTY PROCLAIMS LOCAL EMERGENCY TO ASSIST ALPINE FIRE EVACUEES

SAN DIEGO - At the urging of San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, the County has proclaimed a Local Emergency to assist residents and businesses devastated by Wednesday's massive fire in the East County.

The proclamation urges California Governor Davis to declare a State of Emergency which would make East County residents eligible for state and federal disaster relief funds.

In addition, a food drop is in place to help residents evacuated from the path of the fire. Donations will be distributed to residents at all fire evacuation sites. Non-perishable food donations can made at the Wal Mart at 13487 Camino Canada just off Las Coches Road in El Cajon.

"I realize a fire of this magnitude causes great dismay for residents of Alpine and its surrounding communities," said Jacob. "I want residents to know we're taking every possible measure to better the situation," Jacob said.

As the wind-fueled fire continues to burn, residents with non life-threatening fire worries are encouraged to contact the region's many emergency service agencies.
