COUNTY COMMITS TO SUPPORT THE VICTIMS OF TERRORIST ATTACK
Board of Supervisors Will Give $80,000 to the San Diego Blood Bank

In a show of unity that echoes the feelings of all Americans following last Tuesday's horrific terrorist attacks, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors today approved $80,000 to support the efforts of the San Diego Blood Bank to aid Americans. The allocation came after hearing of the Blood Bank's unanticipated costs throughout the past week as San Diegans donated blood in record numbers to aid survivors in New York.

Supervisor Greg Cox, in Washington, DC at the time of the attacks, praised San Diego County residents for their immediate outpouring of support for the victims and their families. "I commend and gratefully acknowledge the generous spirit of all San Diegans who stepped forward to donate blood," said Supervisor Cox.

"Our community's response was immediate," stated Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "As Americans, we join the nation in committing our support for the victims. I am proud to support the San Diego Blood Bank in their efforts."

Since last Tuesday, the San Diego Blood Bank has collected 2,800 units of blood and, with the help of the U.S. Navy, responded quickly to ship nearly 400 pints to the New York Blood Center.

However, the large number of blood donations had caused a $196,000 unforeseen impact on the San Diego Blood Bank for the cost of supplies and equipment for the collection, testing and shipping of blood to the victims in New York.

The Board voted solidly in support of a measure introduced by Supervisor Greg Cox and Supervisor Dianne Jacob that would have appropriated $40,000 to the San Diego Blood Bank, an organization that continually supports the people of San Diego County and the County's emergency care system through their efforts to collect and distribute blood. During the Board meeting, Chairman Bill Horn and Supervisor Pam Slater each recommended adding an additional $20,000 to the total, bringing the Board's level of support up to $80,000.
